📣 Attention Foreign KOLs in Taiwan: New Tax Rules You Can’t Ignore

Taiwan’s Ministry of Finance and local tax offices have clarified that influencers (KOLs, YouTubers, streamers, creators, etc.) are subject to tax obligations in Taiwan — regardless of nationality.

👀 Who counts as an influencer for Taiwan tax purposes?

From the Tax Bureau’s perspective, it’s simple: anyone providing services and receiving income is an influencer.

You may fall under Taiwan’s tax radar if you:

📱Have a Taiwan SIM card (886 number)

🌐Use a Taiwan IP address ; or

🏠Reside in Taiwan

➡️ In other words, it doesn’t matter if you’re a foreigner or a local citizen — if you operate here, you’re in scope.

💰 When do you need to register for VAT?

If your monthly revenue exceeds NT$50,000 (around USD 1,500), including ad revenue, sponsorships, affiliate payments, etc.

Even if you earn less, but you have a fixed business location, a shop sign, or hired staff → you must still register.

⚠️ Grace period: Until June 2026, you can register without penalties. After that, late registration may trigger back taxes and fines.

🌍 What about overseas viewers or platforms?

Generally, all influencer income is subject to Taiwan’s 5% VAT.

Exception: If you can prove your services were provided exclusively to audiences outside Taiwan (with proper evidence, e.g., payment data or audience IP info etc.), you may apply for the 0% VAT rate.

Without proof? → The 5% VAT applies.

📌 LY CPA’s Advice

Don’t assume “my platform pays me from abroad, so I don’t owe Taiwan taxes.” The tax authority looks at where you operate, not just who pays you.

Always keep clear financial records, contracts, invoices, and audience/payment data.

If you plan to operate in Taiwan long-term, consult a professional CPA to choose the right structure (individual vs. company) to legally optimize your taxes and reduce risk. Even if a short-term visit, a tax advice beforehand would be recommended as well.

👉 If you’re a foreign influencer or content creator in Taiwan, now’s the best time to get your tax registration in order before the grace period ends — so you can focus on growing your brand without worrying about penalties later
